Farmington explosion sends one to hospital, displaces 10 apartment units

Friday , July 27, 2018 - 4:51 PM

FARMINGTON — The residents of 10 units in a Farmington apartment complex will not be able to return home after an explosion rocked the area Thursday evening.

Police were dispatched to the Avanti at Farmington Station apartment complex at 736 West State St. around 6 p.m. Thursday to a call of an explosion that happened in a garage, according to Farmington Police Chief Wayne Hansen

Hansen said a man in his early to mid 30s suffered second- and third-degree burns to his face and chest. He was taken via Intermountain Life Flight to the University of Utah Hospital’s Burn Center in Salt Lake City, Hansen said.

The man was last known to be in critical condition as of Friday afternoon and will remain at the burn center for treatment over the next few days, according to Hansen.

Police have not determined what caused the explosion and are still investigating the case, Hansen said.

Officers have yet to interview the man injured in the fire.

Although investigators have yet to estimate the full cost of the damages, Hansen said the explosion left 10 apartments uninhabitable for at least the next few months. He said the building’s structural integrity was “definitely compromised” from the explosion.

Hansen added the apartment’s management has done a good job of finding temporary housing for those displaced.
